EID MAR: an enigmatic cast counterfeit of a denarius (RRC 508/3) and a ›Tardani‹ die of the same type

Abstract

This article presents a cast counterfeit of a denarius of the Crawford, RRC 508/3 type (https://numismatics.org/crro/id/rrc-508.3). It is unclear whether this cast was made from a struck counterfeit – in which case it would be of the highest quality and pose a significant risk – or whether it originates from an original coin, in which case it would reveal dies that have not yet been published. In connection with the first possibility, the die of the forger ›Tardani‹ for the type in question is published here for the first time.
