From a sociological perspective, aligning society more closely with the ideal of sustainability appears to be failing due to a highly differentiated society and the lack of content in the value of sustainability itself. For both of these problems, organizations have recently been discussed as specific problem solvers for adapting to a complex society. In doing so, they must also consider and translate the unavailable. On a conceptual level, differentiation theoretical organizational sociology is extended with the theory of human differentiation in order to capture how the interests of future generations, but also of nature and artefacts, are translated and made available. This is illustrated by three case studies: The Degrees Initiative interprets the needs of future generations, the Rainforest Connection wants to “make nature speak” and Archetype AI decodes what information artifacts can offer us.
