Our representative study, 'What does Germany know about cooperatives?', shows that, while the term 'cooperative' is widely recognised, knowledge of them remains superficial.
It is estimated that around one-fifth of the population is a member of at least one cooperative, primarily of cooperative banks and housing cooperatives. Energy and social cooperatives are becoming more visible. The positive core image is characterised by democratic leadership, member support and long-term orientation, while ecological and economic aspects remain in need of explanation.
Compared to earlier studies, stable basic patterns are emerging, albeit with slight shifts towards new sectors. Storytelling, regional examples and evidence-based 'proof points' can strengthen understanding and legitimacy in communication and politics.
